Aegis: The First Mission (アイギス THE FIRST MISSION) is a 3D action role-playing video game developed and published by BBMF. It is a prequel to Atlus's 2006 game Persona 3 and is part of the Persona series, itself a sub-series of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. The game was originally released for Japanese feature phones on October 29, 2007. It was considered lost for years until G-Mode re-released it for the Nintendo Switch and Windows on June 6, 2024, under the G-mode Archives line as Persona 3 Aegis: The First Mission.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
The story is set ten years before Persona 3 and takes place over six days in May 1999. It follows the humanoid robot Aigis during an incident at the Kirijo Ergonomics Research Laboratory on Yakushima island, Japan. Together with her trainer Sota Aizawa and the chief scientist Yu Kimijima, Aigis battles enemies and uncovers mysteries at the laboratory.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
In Aegis: The First Mission, players control Aigis, a humanoid robot capable of running, jumping, and battling enemies in a 3D environment. The game features a mix of action and role-playing elements, where Aigis can use three different weapon types: a gun, a grenade launcher, and a drill for melee combat. These weapons can be upgraded at the research lab, improving their damage and functionality. Additionally, Aigis can summon her persona, Palladion, to perform offensive and supportive skills, which are sometimes necessary as certain enemies are immune to physical weapons.
Players earn experience points and money by defeating enemies, leveling up Aigis, and unlocking new skills for Palladion. Items such as armor and footwear can be found in treasure chests or purchased from the research laboratory.
Development and Release[edit | edit source]
Aegis: The First Mission was initially released on October 29, 2007, for Japanese feature phones through the Megaten α mobile distribution service. After its release, the game became unavailable, leading to preservationists searching for old phones with the game installed, but they were unsuccessful. In 2024, G-mode re-released the game for Nintendo Switch and Windows as the 100th title in their G-mode Archives line. The re-release was rebuilt using the Unity engine rather than being emulated from the original, making it accessible to modern audiences.
Aegis: The First Mission was re-released as part of the G-mode Archives collection on June 6, 2024.
